THE YOUNG FLUTE PLAYER SERIES
A progressive and engaging collection of flute method, accompaniment and ensemble books by Australian music educator Karen North.
The Young Flute Player series has supported beginner flute students and teachers for more than 35 years. Each book combines carefully structured musical development with approachable repertoire, practical exercises and free online recordings.
Please note: The six books serve different purposes and are not all consecutive student method books.
BOOK 1 – BEGINNER METHOD
The Young Flute Player Book 1 provides a clear and supportive introduction to flute playing. Students progress through easy-to-follow units featuring exercises, scales, familiar pieces, musical activities and helpful illustrations.
BOOK 2 – GRADE 1-2 METHOD
Book 2 continues the progressive method established in Book 1 and introduces a broader selection of repertoire. The music ranges from traditional tunes and festive pieces to works inspired by composers such as Bach and Joplin. Exercises and scales are directly connected to the repertoire, helping students understand how technical development supports musical performance.
BOOK 3 – TEACHER’S ACCOMPANIMENT BOOK
Book 3 contains the teacher’s piano accompaniments and flute duet parts that support the other books in the series. It allows students to experience accompanied playing from their earliest lessons through to more advanced repertoire.
Most of the piano parts are designed to be approachable for flute teachers, including those with limited piano experience.
BOOK 4 – BEGINNER DUETS & TRIOS
Book 4 introduces young students to ensemble playing through accessible duets, trios and rounds. Colour-coded music helps beginners identify and follow their individual parts more easily. Students need to know only four or five notes to begin playing the earliest arrangements. Many pieces can be performed as either a duet or trio, making the book suitable for lessons, group classes and school ensembles.
BOOK 5 – INTERMEDIATE DUETS & TRIOS
Book 5 develops ensemble skills through intermediate-level duets, trios, rounds and focused warm-up exercises. Colour-coded clefs and key signatures help students follow their parts confidently. The collection includes music by a wide range of composers, traditional tunes from around the world and festive repertoire. Many arrangements can be played as either a duet or trio.
BOOK 6 – ADULT & TEENAGE BEGINNER METHOD
The Young at Heart Flute Player is a complete beginner method written specifically for teenage and adult learners. It covers similar foundational material to Book 1 but presents it with age-appropriate repertoire and design.
Thirty progressive units gradually introduce new notes, rhythms, scales and techniques. The repertoire includes arrangements connected with composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bartók and Dvořák, along with traditional music from around the world.
Please note: Book 6 is an age-appropriate alternative to Book 1 rather than the final level in the series. Students may progress into Book 2 after completing it.
