This viola was made by Hagen Weise in Baiersdorf in 2023. Weise has been active since 1991 when he commenced work for the Roderisch Paesold Company in Bubenreuth, Germany. In 2004 Weise successfully completed his master violin-making examination. Since 2010 Weise has been dedicated to making fine instruments in his own workshop in Baiersdorf, often experimenting with different kinds of woods and models of different makers.
It is labelled "Hagen Weise / "Conte Vitale" / Baiersdorf September 2023" and is based on the Andrea Guarneri "Conte Vitale" viola. The body measures 412mm along the back, 200mm across the upper bouts and 247mm across the lower bouts. It has a one-piece back of a slab-cut maple with several angled figures of broadly curled flame, and matching ribs and scroll. The top is a widely grained spruce, and the viola is finished with spruce sonowood fittings and fingerboard, and a golden varnish.
It has a broad and direct sound, with ample projection and lots of clarity in the lower end. Articulation is quite strong, and the viola can render many different characters and effects with ease. It plays well in all registers and would be well suited to players of a tertiary or professional level in all forms of playing.
