Hagen Weise has been active since 1991 when he commenced work for the Roderisch Paesold Company in Bubenreuth, Germany. In 2004 Weise successfully completed his master violin-making examination. Since 2010 Weise has been dedicated to making fine instruments in his own workshop in Baiersdorf, often experimenting with different kinds of woods and models of different makers. This violin comes with photos and a certificate of authenticity from the maker.
This violin is labelled "Hagen Weise / Baiersdorf" along with the year and a workshop number, and is based on a Guarneri model. The body measures 354mm along the back, 170mm across the upper bouts and 211mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of highly flamed maple with a tight curl, and matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely grained spruce, and the violin is finished with ebony fittings and a light amber-golden varnish.
It has a wide, open sound, which feels clean and resonant in all registers. Projection is both easy and natural, and the violin has an innate smoothness to its tone that would be just as well suited to solo repertoire as it would be to orchestral and chamber music. As such, this violin would be best for players in high school or above, looking to continue with exams, recitals, or orchestras.
