This handcrafted ukulele stand was made by Iain Johnson in 2025 exclusively for Crescendo Music. Each stand is individually crafted and custom-fitted to the exact dimensions of the violin it’s made for. The stand pictured here was designed to suit m L Luthier tenor ukulele, which shares has a unique shape and size to its brand—resulting in a cradle that hugs the instrument perfectly.
The stand is crafted primarily from American Black Walnut, prized for its deep, rich chocolate-brown colour with occasional lighter streaks that create a striking contrast. It has a straight to slightly wavy grain and a smooth, natural luster that enhances its elegant appearance. Walnut is a moderately dense hardwood known for its excellent durability and stability, making it a popular and reliable choice for finely crafted instrument stands. Iain’s designs are also deeply inspired by nature and local culture—his signature forms, like the “swan neck” and “snake-like” silhouettes, reflect the graceful shapes and stories found in Western Australia’s natural landscape. About Stands for Sound
Stands for Sound, founded by Iain Johnson in late 2020 and based in Western Australia, began with a simple act of gratitude. When Iain first explored learning the guitar in 2019, a friend lent him an instrument. In return, Iain sought to gift a stand for his friend’s Gibson but couldn't find a suitable one—so he crafted it himself. With over 20 years of woodworking experience, what started as a personal gesture evolved into a passionate venture creating handcrafted stands for various stringed instruments. Iain’s lifelong love for working with timber, born out of necessity and nurtured through years of making furniture for family, friends, and non-profits, now finds its expression in these elegant, functional designs.

About Our Stands
Each stand is handcrafted from a selection of Australian and imported timbers, chosen for their beautiful grain and colour combinations. Initially made for acoustic guitars, the range now includes stands for violins, ukuleles, banjos, and more. Many designs feature intricate inlays and unique neck shapes like the “swan neck” or “snake-like” form, each with artistic storytelling elements—such as water ripples or reptilian camouflage—woven into the base. Practical elements are also thoughtfully included: cork and wool padding in the cradle and neck support protect instruments from contact damage. Every stand is designed to be not only a safe resting place but also a work of art that enhances and complements the instrument it holds.
