Crescendo Music 2026 Annual Competition

Celebrating 50 Years of Musical Excellence

Crescendo Music is thrilled to announce our second annual competition, proudly hosted at our brand-new Performance Hall in Myaree!

This event marks a milestone for our family-run business, whose roots in music have always been deeply grounded in music education. Over the past 50 years, our success has been made possible through the unwavering support of local music teachers, and we are excited to give back by creating a platform that celebrates talent, promotes musical growth, and fosters community collaboration.

This August, we invite passionate music educators, music schools, and their students to join us in this exciting event — not just to compete, but to challenge themselves, inspire others, and deepen their appreciation for musical performance.

The event will take place between 23nd August - 13th September, with categories organised by performance level. External professional adjudicators will be present to score each performance and provide feedback. Winners will be awarded for first, second, and third place, with trophies, gifts, certificates, and gift vouchers to be given out.

Terms & Conditions

1. Eligibility

Open to students of all ages and levels
Students will be grouped by certified grade level or submitted repertoire for fair judging

2. Registration

Deadline: Monday, 20th July 2026
Entry Fee: from $25 per student
Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis
Late entries may not be accepted due to scheduling constraints

3. Performance Guidelines

Graded repertoire must be from current AMEB / ABRSM Syllabus, one solo piece per student
Two or more contrasting pieces for advanced level performance
Memorisation encouraged but not mandatory
All pieces must be approved by the teacher before submission
Students must bring a printed copy of their performance piece for the adjudicators on the day

4. Judging & Feedback

Performances will be assessed by external adjudicators
Judging will consider technique, expression, accuracy, and stage presence
The judges’ decisions are final

5. Awards & Recognition

Trophies for 1st place winners
Certificates for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
Adjudicator feedback form for all participants
Voucher and Cash Prize awarded to outstanding performances
Invitation to perform in a Showcase Concert for select winners

6. Photography & Media

By entering, participants agree to potential use of photographs and video for event promotion unless stated otherwise in writing
Parents and teachers may only record their own students

7. Dress Code & Conduct

Formal concert attire is required
Respectful and courteous behaviour is expected from all attendees

8. Cancellations

No refunds will be issued once the performance schedule is released

9. Arrival & Check-In

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled performance
Late arrivals may result in disqualification

Meet Your Adjudicators

Dr Tonya Lemoh Australian/Sierra-Leonean pianist Tonya Lemoh has performed across five continents as a soloist and chamber musician. She was a member of the piano faculty of Copenhagen University for over ten years and is currently Head of Classical Piano at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). A passionate advocate of Australian music, she has recorded the complete piano works of Raymond Hanson for Naxos. A prize winner in international piano competitions, she has released numerous solo CDs for international labels, most recently a solo album for ABC Classics, “I dream a world”. She has extensive experience in Australia and internationally as an adjudicator and examiner.

Sophie Curtis is a dedicated and innovative music educator committed to sharing the benefits of music-making. Trained as a classical cellist in Perth, Sophie possesses extensive experience as a performing artist, having served as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral section leader, and recording artist. However, her most significant impact has been in the field of music education. Driven by a passion for chamber music and teaching, she founded the WA Young Artists Chamber Music Program (WAYACHAMP) in 2011. This unique program, the only one of its kind in Australia, offers young musicians the opportunity to develop their ensemble skills within a creative and collaborative environment. As an educator, Sophie has taught instrumental music from beginner to tertiary levels. She has toured nationally for Musica Viva In Schools, is an active member of the Australian Strings Association (AUSTA) and serves as an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Due to her expertise and thoughtful guidance, Sophie is frequently invited to adjudicate or examine at schools and performing arts festivals across Perth. Sophie holds a BMus (Hons) and MMus from UWA, where she recently returned to pursue a PhD focusing on pedagogical approaches to chamber music education for pre-tertiary students.
